NGSS: Changes, Impacts, and Responses in K-12 and CSU

Educators from California State University (CSU) and the Oakland Unified School District (California) around the Next Generation Science Standards came together to participate in a discussion. Panelists focused on how the shifts in practice required of classroom teachers have led CSU teacher preparation programs to connect both engineering and literacy with their science coursework.

Scientists for Tomorrow

Scientists for Tomorrow is a presentation from the Promising Practices Dissemination work group for the STEM Committee. Marcelo Caplan, Associate Professor for the Department of Science and Mathematics at Columbia College in Chicago, is working on an out-of-school time STEM Initiative called Scientists for Tomorrow. This National Science Foundation funded initaiative is designed to bring quality STEM learning opportunities to the youth in out-of-school time programs. Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT)

Phyllis Westrup from Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT) gave a presentation at our February STEM Committee meeting about all of the great resources that RAFT has to offer. These resources include: idea sheets, tips sheets, professional development opportunities, STEM activity videos and much more. 

Next Generation Science Standards

Kirk Brown from San Joaquin County Office of Education gave a very informative presentation on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The presentation focuses on the three dimensions of the NGSS and specifically how after school can help support these standards. 

National Science Teachers Association (NSTA)

The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has a variety of Web Seminars that are available on their website. NSTA Web Seminars are free, 90-minute, live professional development experiences. They also archive previous Web Seminars that are also available on their website.
