As we all know the autmnal equinox (September 23) is getting closer and marks the official end of summer in the northern hemisphere. For some of us, summer officially ended a few weeks ago (if not earlier) with the start of the 2014-2015 academic year.

Sacramento - STEMtastic Summer Afterschool Activities

Superintendents, school districts, afterschool providers, administrators, certificated teachers, and afterschool practicioners all throughout Region 3 have banded together to help stave off the "summer slide" & weight gain that many children experience once the school doors close for summer. Utilizing supplemental funding from CDO, Title I funds, grants from private foundations, etc. they have been able to open up some of the schools in their districts to provide the children that they serve with either four to eight week long Summer Learning Programs.

Students in Regular Day and After School Programs at Lymon Gilmore Middle School Participate in Large Scientific Project

On May 31, 2014, regular day and and after school programs at Lymon Gilmore Middle School hosted the Second Annual Flight Day in celebration of Gilmore's first successful airplane flight by setting up many interactive activity booths educating students about the science and engineering behind the principles of flight. This event brought together an entire community of educators and even included a fly over by 15 local pilots.

They have recently wrapped up their STEMpower! Event & has a ton of resources to share with everyone!


STEM-tastic After School Activities in Region 3

STEM-tastic After School Activities in Region 3 is an After School Region 3 blog post about the Grass Valley School District gathering at Lyman Gilmore Middle School (over 1,000 students) on May 21, 2014 to celebrate the 112th anniversary of Lyman Gilmore's supposed maiden flight. "The regular day staff, the after school staff, local businesses, and the community came together to put on the Second Annual Flight Day.

Edge Up University Provides Online Professional Development

The Ventura County Office of Education, through their “Edge Up” University provides access to many great online professional development resources. VCOE outlines a reflection process format to maximize classroom management efficiency and also provides a suggested implementation plan. The course catalog includes many different areas for professional development: classroom management, homework help/tutoring, instruction, language arts, mathematics, physical activity, science, STEM, social and emotional development, technology, 21st century skills, and program quality.
