Why Are Girls Not Pursuing Computer Science Degrees

In early education, both girls and boys equally like computer science and later on, they both score equally on the AP computer science exam. However, only 18% of women make up computer science majors and surprisingly, the percentage of women majoring in computer science have actually dropped since the 1980s. To inspire girls to major in computer science, Edudemic suggests that we must change their perceptions by:

  • Showing female computer science role models
  • Introducing girls to programming early on
  • Making people aware of stereotypes
  • Providing encouragement beyond early education
  • Implementing social and hands-on learning activities
