Summary:

Why Participate Actively in the STEM Committee?

  • Join a community of leaders in STEM in Out-of-School Time (OST) in California.
  • Inform and influence the field of STEM in OST, as well as the work of a statewide organization (the California Afterschool Network) in a three year initiative to help the field in implementing high quality STEM learning opportunities in OST.
  • Provide guidance to, and inform the work of newly forming Regional Innovation Supports for STEM in OST.  
  • Inform and influence the development of a virtual STEM resource.  
  • Receive advance notice of available STEM resources
  • Receive priority consideration for opportunities that arise from our statewide and national partners.
  • Representatives from STEM related Businesses and Industry, Higher Education, Museums and Science Centers can gain access to after school and summer programs as well as promising practices in outreach, youth internship, and volunteer placement opportunities.
  • Network and learn promising practices and strategies from statewide and national practitioners implementing STEM in OST.
What does active Committee Participation Mean?
  • Consistent participation in (attend 9 of 11) monthly committee meetings (mostly virtual meetings - 1.5 hours).
  • Contribution to the formation of a work plan for the committee.
  • Committing to contribute to at least one item of the committee work plan.
  • Work outside of Committee meeting times not to exceed three hours monthly (unless they join more than one sub-group).

Part of being an active member on the STEM Committee is to participate in at least one work group to carry out the work of the committee.  We really see this as a way for individuals in the field to have leadership opportunities, and opportunities to influence work at the statewide level.  This is the spirit of Network Committee and work group participation.  Please sign up for at least one (or more) work groups below, and indicate whether you would like to be a co-chair for that work group.

Summary of work group member roles:

  • Participate in work group calls
  • Offer input and suggestions to the work group
  • Completion of necessary tasks outside of meetings to advance the work of the work group as needed
  • Reporting back to Co-chairs

Summary of work group Co-chair roles:

  • Agenda creation for work group meetings
  • Work group meeting facilitation
  • Synthesis of work group and committee input to advance work group efforts where applicable (i.e. information from surveys, verbal input, etc.)  
  • Delegation of tasks among work group members
  • Reporting to Committee members about the progress of the work group
  • Ultimately responsible for synthesis and finalization of work group product

Supports:

  • Either Network staff, Committee Co-chairs, or both will participate in each work group meeting
  • Network staff will coordinate and send out meeting information, notes, and next steps
  • Network staff will be provide technology supports for all meetings

Join the Next Generation Science Standards Work Group

The purpose of this work group is to provide tools and resources to the field to: generate a better understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards, communicate with key stakeholders (core instructional day, districts, etc.) on the complementary implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards, and identify valuable resources to help support the understanding and implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards.

Join the Virtual Innovation Center Work Group

The purpose of this work group is to offer input and suggestions to the Power of Discovery: STEM2 Virtual Innovation Supports (website) and how it can be maximized to provide virtual support to the field to advance quality STEM learning.  The website will house multiple resources for a wide variety of users, as well as pertinent documents, promising practices, and chat forums for our Regional Innovation Support Providers.  Members of this work group will be asked to test the website and offer feedback to the committee, as well as explore the idea of digital badges, and bring back information to committee members.

Join the Promising Practices Dissemination Work Group

The purpose of this work group is to recruit and encourage leaders in the STEM field to guest speak at the monthly STEM committee meetings.  This Work Group will seek input from the Committee on information it is seeking and promising practices it would like to learn more about.  Examples from recent Committee meetings include research on STEM in OST in CA, and promising practices / resources for STEM Service Learning. This work group will finalize the processes by which presenters are selected (i.e. the presentation request form) and actively recruit / determine guest speakers who will offer valuable presentations to the Committee.  

Join the Resource Presentation Work Group

The purpose of this work group is to recruit and encourage resource organizations/ individuals in the STEM field to guest speak at the monthly STEM Committee meetings. This work group will seek input from the Committee on information it is seeking and resources it would like to know more about. Examples from recent Committee meetings include: You for Youth ,4H, RAFT, etc. This work group will finalize the processes by which presenters are selected (i.e. the presentation request form) and actively recruit / determine guest speakers who will offer valuable presentations to the Committee.  

 

 

Contact Information

The Commitment that active Committee Participants make is to attend 9 of the first 11 monthly meetings of the STEM Committee. Meetings will take place virtually for ninety minutes. Participants will be actively engaged in creating the Committee work plan, and commit to at least one item on the workplan. Accomplishing these goals may have commitment outside of regularly scheduled meetings not to exceed three hours monthly
