Girlbusters: Fighting Against Gender Bias For Women in STEM

In a recent study conducted by the University of California's Hastings College of the Law, a whopping 100 percent of women of color interviewed said they've experienced gender bias, compared to 93 percent of white women (Sorry, Leslie Jones, things just got real for you). But 93 percent for white women is hardly a win.

There are various theories, and many of them focus on childhood. Parents and toy-makers discourage girls from studying math and science. So do their teachers. Girls lack role models in those fields, and grow up believing they wouldn’t do well in them.

Research in Engineering Education

The REE program accepts a diverse range of project scales from small, exploratory projects to large scale investigations with a broad, systemic scope; project budgets should match the project scope.  Small-scale, exploratory projects with high transformative potential are strongly encouraged.  The estimated number of awarded proposals is based on a projected average funding level of approximately $100,000 per project per year.   All PIs should discuss the budget of proposed projects with a cognizant program officer before submission.

You’ve probably heard of light-emitting diodes, a type of energy-efficient light. While they’re good for practical reasons—say, illuminating a room or a passageway—they can also add a little bling to clothing. To incorporate LEDs into your favorite accessories, you’ll start by creating a basic circuit from a battery, two pieces of wire, and an LED. You’ll then modify this circuit so that you can turn it on and off using fasteners like buttons, zippers, laces, hooks, and buckles. Bridging the Gap for Top-Ranked Female Stem Students Requires Disruptive Strategies

Busting the myth that girls don't do science, technology, engineering or math (STEM), the release of the first ever national rankings of top science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) students by STEM-Premier reveals 23 of the top 50 students are female.
The students, representing all 50 states with STEM Premier profiles, were ranked and rated based on an algorithm of over 30 profile metrics including achievements, experiences and more.

Women falling behind in STEM bachelor’s degrees

A new report from the National Student Clearinghouse looks at degrees in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math) and finds that the share of STEM bachelor’s degrees going to women ticked down over the past decade. The biggest decline was in computer science, where women received 23 percent of bachelor’s degrees awarded in 2004 and just 18 percent in 2014.
